Travel Candids: Thailand

I occasionally feel that I am a total workaholic(I am), it’s easy to be one when you love what you do. But I occasionally toy with the idea of not bringing a camera on a non-work trip just as some sort of therapy, just to say I did it, and am able to separate work and life. Well, as Claudia can attest, I generally do the opposite, dragging along on vacations: stands, tripods, boxes of film, 4×5 cameras etc. This last trip to SE Asia I brought a medium format point and shoot for the R&R section of the trip to Thailand. It was really great and got me back to a more candid natural light way of thinking, I’ve been doing so much staged / lit / large format work lately that it was incredibly refreshing to just point.. and shoot!

This will be the genesis of a new section of Travel Candids on the site, with the first installments being Thailand and the Muay Thai images previously posted here in the news blog.

Dispatch from Bangkok: Muay Thai

On a recent trip to Thailand I unexpectedly found myself in one of the most vibrant and textured atmospheres I’d ever been in, Luckily I had my point and shoot with me loaded with some BW film. I must return to this place with a proper camera and spend a few days, the sound of the crowd, the music, the chanting synced with the fighters knee strikes etc just added to the controlled mania. We sat near the ring this time, but I’d love to do a night in the rafters as that’s where all the betting happens. How they organized and keep track of who’s betting on who and how much in that frantic mess is beyond me!

All images at a larger size are now on my main portfolio website.

Here is a video of the traditional music being played by the live band, this is the more frantic round 5 music, other rounds and the intro where they circle each other can be found in the related videos on youtube.

Back from Canada & another great Aether shoot!

Had the great pleasure of heading up to Nelson BC this winter for a week in Baldface the deep snow paradise. Driving in cats around many thousands of acres of pristine wilderness(until the cats drove through it, that is) and skiing many many untouched slopes and glades was just a great compliment to one of the best photoshoots i’ve been a part of to date. Love everyone over at Aether!

Unfortunately I won’t be able to post the images until this summer, but at that point I’ll have done 4 seasons for them and will make a special section on the site to feature some of my favorite images.

New Still Life Portfolio!

Hello All! Happy to announce a new still life portfolio. Eventually I’ll separate edibles and non edibles, but for now the potatoes and the wrenches shall co-exist!

Masa Bakery Bogotá

In the early Fall I went down to do the promotional and marketing materials for an amazing bakery down in Bogota. Silvana Villegas is behind the recipes and production of everything at the bakery. A native of Colombia, she studied at the Culinary Institute of America and got her experience at various high end NYC restaurants in the pastry and baking side of things. Julian Jaramillo, a very good friend of mine and an advertising art director, is her husband and has done the brand, coordination of the promotional materials, website, and helps out in myriad other ways. Her Sister, Mariana, who manages the family bakery, is also very present in the operations and along with Alejandra Botero who was prop/food styling we all had a great time on this shoot! Scroll down for some portraits of Silvana, Mariana, and Julian. The black and whites mid way down were for an abstract windowed wall that faced the street, we wanted to do something that hinted at what was going on inside without pelting casual passersby with muffins.

IBM Blue Gene Supercomputer

In September I was asked by Popular Mechanics to shoot the IBM Blue Gene Supercomputer facility in Rochester, MN. It was a great day, and was very interesting to photograph all of the components of the machine, as seen below: From the empty chassis, to the individual chips inserted into their racks, and slid into the chassis, the water coolant system hooked up through the floor access panels and finally all the cables connected and the application of the vanity cover with the IBM branding. There were so many fans running to keep everything cool that being in there all day I was wishing I had brought earplugs. Doing more and more tech shoots and industrial subjects earplugs have become a staple item in my camera case.

Thanks to everyone at IBM and Allyson and Michelle from Popular Mechanics for some great images!
